The Blaxound – Barcelona Funk & Soul Visionary
The Blaxound is the long-running project of Barcelona-based musician, guitarist, producer, and engineer Marta Román, known for crafting vintage-inspired funk and cinematic soul since the early 2000s. Her music blends deep, organ-driven grooves with punchy drums and rich basslines, fusing the spirit of 60s and 70s funk with a refined modern studio touch.
In 2024, The Blaxound released “Brand New Old Story Pt. 2 / Spring King” on Village Live Records, a heavy double-sider 45 built for DJs and dancefloors alike. Packed with greasy drums, raw bass, and soulful instrumentation, the record continues her mission to keep Barcelona’s modern funk heartbeat alive.
Prior to this, The Blaxound gained recognition through releases such as El Maravilloso Sonido Instrumental (Golden Rules) and collaborations with John Vermont, both of which were nominated for Best Album of the Year at The Clinton’s - Spain’s awards for African American Music hosted by Enlacefunk magazine. These projects cemented Marta Román as one of Spain’s most distinctive voices in contemporary funk and soul.
The Blaxound’s work celebrates everything from gritty drum breaks to lush, cinematic arrangements, bridging the gap between vintage authenticity and modern energy - a sound that speaks to both crate-diggers and dancefloors worldwide.
