Delu Kanam – African Funk Collective
Delu Kanam is a UK-born, New Zealand–honed, and Eastern Europe–based African funk project led by producer, multi-instrumentalist, and DJ Matt Davies. Rooted in a deep passion for African rhythms, global grooves, and analogue sound, Delu Kanam delivers a high-energy, genre-blending experience that fuses funk, Afro-disco, and psychedelic textures into a vibrant, electrifying collective sound.
On 9 May 2025, Village Live Records released Delu Kanam’s highly anticipated debut 7-inch single “Mafaro / Donna” - a powerful introduction to the project ahead of their forthcoming debut album. The release highlights Delu Kanam’s ability to combine raw analogue production with infectious, groove-heavy arrangements that celebrate rhythm, joy, and communal energy.
“Mafaro” - meaning “We’re Having Fun” in Shona, a language of Zimbabwe - is an Afro-disco–inspired track driven by funky Fender Rhodes lines, duelling guitar riffs, hypnotic percussion, and vibrant horn stabs. The lyrics capture the carefree spirit of celebration: “Leave me alone, I want to dance. Let’s not make a commotion, and have a good time.” Already championed by international DJs, it’s a guaranteed dancefloor igniter.
On the B-side, “Donna” ventures into deeper, more psychedelic Afro-funk territory, showcasing Delu Kanam’s versatility and their ability to explore both groove-forward and atmospheric soundscapes. Together, the tracks embody Matt Davies’ vision of blending African funk traditions with contemporary sensibilities, resulting in music that feels both timeless and thrillingly fresh.
