Village Live Records proudly presents Tenement, the forthcoming EP from New York funk duo The Du-Rites.
Available on limited edition transparent 10” vinyl with OBI strip and standard black 10” vinyl with OBI, Tenement marks the group’s long-awaited return after a three-year break from full-length releases.
The Du-Rites - Jay Mumford (drums, keys, kalimba, percussion) and Pablo Martin (guitar, bass, keys, percussion) - have carved out a reputation for raw, unfiltered, forward-thinking funk. After releasing seven albums in six years, the pair eased off album drops following 2022’s Plug It In, but never stopped creating. Jay stayed busy as a session drummer (Gnarls Barkley, Kelly Finnigan, Just Blaze), landed a sample on a Vampire Weekend track, and toured with guitarist Adrian Quesada. Pablo toured with UK singer-songwriter Belouis Some, producing and composing between shows. The duo also kept up their weekly NYC residency and released a run of digital singles to keep the momentum alive.
With Tenement, The Du-Rites return sharper than ever - delivering a tight, razor-focused collection built on rugged drums, warped synths and mutant funk guitar. Guest flautist Seth Hachen lifts the hazy opener “In Du Time”, while the title track leans into pure, hard-hitting instrumental funk. “5 on the Floor” blends kalimba textures with beautifully skewed drum work, and “Bucky’s Groove” snaps back with straight-up b-boy breakbeats. Tracks like “Filibuster” and “Super Phunk” showcase the duo’s adventurous approach to guitar and synth tones, avoiding predictable retro-funk clichés while staying rooted in raw drum grit.
At its heart, Tenement is an EP built entirely on groove - abstract groove, stank-face groove, body-moving, neck-snapping groove - packed into just under 17 minutes.
